Eight months ago, ChatGPT carried no ads at all. By August 31, 2026, OpenAI said its ads business had passed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days. On October 21 it added that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns and that ads now run in 89 countries.

Those are big numbers for a channel most B2B marketers haven't tested yet. They also come with caveats: run rates aren't booked revenue, third-party trackers disagree, and OpenAI publishes no click-rate benchmarks.

This report pulls the ChatGPT ads statistics that matter for budget decisions into one place: revenue, advertiser counts, pricing, rollout by market, ad frequency, click rates, spend by category, and how the channel compares with Google and Meta. Every figure links to its source.

ChatGPT ad revenue statistics

The revenue curve is the steepest part of the story. Six weeks into the US pilot, the ads business had passed $100 million in annualized revenue, with more than 600 advertisers and self-serve access planned for April.

By August 31, OpenAI said the business had reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, with "tens of thousands" of advertisers across more than 40 countries at that point. Adweek noted that the figure is a forward-looking run rate, not revenue already collected. Digiday's math, as summarized by PPC Land, puts the monthly revenue behind it at roughly $83 million.

OpenAI's internal plan is far more ambitious. Projections reported in April show $2.5 billion in ad revenue for 2026, $11 billion in 2027, $25 billion in 2028, $53 billion in 2029, and $100 billion in 2030, assuming 2.75 billion weekly users by 2030. Hitting $100 billion from today's run rate would take a compound annual growth rate of about 216%, per Digiday's calculation.

Read run rates carefully: a $1B annualized run rate means the latest period, multiplied out to a year. It is not $1B in booked 2026 revenue, and it can move fast in either direction while pricing and inventory are still changing.

How many advertisers use ChatGPT ads?

The advertiser base went from a handful of enterprise brands to six figures in about eight months. The early pilot included Target, Ford, and Adobe, with WPP, Omnicom, and Dentsu as agency partners. In March, OpenAI counted more than 600 advertisers, and nearly 80% of small businesses it surveyed said they were interested.

Third-party trackers show how fast the pool filled after self-serve opened. Sensor Tower counted about 1,200 unique US advertisers in August, growing about 43% a month from May to August. Adthena measured weekly unique ChatGPT advertisers rising from 7,306 in the week of July 9 to 12,075 by August 31, a gain of about 65%. By October 21, OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns since launch.

The mix matters for B2B teams. Similarweb's June data shows the top US advertisers were concentrated in software and professional services, including Monday.com, Framer, Attio, Aikido Security, and SAP, with Home Depot and VistaPrint as the consumer exceptions. If you sell software, you're already competing in the busiest part of the auction.

ChatGPT ads pricing: CPM, CPC, and minimum spend

Pricing has dropped at almost every step. At launch, brands paid about $60 per thousand impressions, a level Digiday compared to premium TV inventory, while Meta CPMs typically sit under $20. Adweek confirmed a $200,000 minimum commitment for early buyers.

In April, OpenAI quietly launched Ads Manager for a subset of advertisers and cut the minimum to $50,000. Within weeks, Search Engine Journal reported CPC bidding at $3 to $5 per click, with CPMs falling from $60 to as low as $25. On May 5, OpenAI made CPC bidding and a beta self-serve Ads Manager official.

Today, OpenAI's help center describes a relevance-weighted second-price auction with a recommended starting max CPC of $3 to $5. GrowthCentr's breakdown of how the ChatGPT ads auction works explains why relevance can matter as much as your bid.

Where ChatGPT ads run: countries and eligibility

Ads run only for adults on the Free and Go tiers. OpenAI's January policy says Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise stay ad-free, and ads won't show to users under 18 or near health, mental health, or political topics. Go costs $8 a month.

The country list grew in steps. The US pilot started on February 9, 2026, and an August 11 update on the same page added the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. By August 31, ads were live in more than 40 countries, with self-serve open across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The October 21 expansion added 26 more countries for a total of 89, including 14 in Latin America plus Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, and Ukraine.

How often ChatGPT shows ads

Ad load has climbed fast. In February, Adthena found ads in about 0.8% of responses. Sensor Tower reported in March that ads served had risen about 600% since March 1, reaching about 5% of mobile users, up from 1%.

By summer the numbers looked different. Similarweb measured ads in 14% of US desktop responses in May and 26% in June 2026. Its August report put the share at 26% of ChatGPT responses for Free and Go users, against nearly 30% of ad-eligible queries in Google's AI Mode. Sensor Tower found US mobile ads per user per hour up 163% from April to August.

Timing is unusual too. Similarweb found 66.3% of ChatGPT ads appear after the second prompt or later, not on the first answer. That means your ad usually meets someone who's already several questions into a decision.

ChatGPT ads click-through rate and performance

Click rates are low by search standards. Similarweb measured a 0.50% click-through rate in June 2026, down from a reported 0.68% in May, against a Google Search benchmark of about 6.4%. But 65.3% of sessions continue after an ad appears, so a click isn't the only outcome worth measuring.

OpenAI doesn't publish CTR benchmarks. Its own examples are outcome-based: one ecommerce advertiser saw 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner said more than 80% of ad-driven traffic came from new customers. Treat both as selected case studies, not averages.

Reporting is still basic. Ads Manager shows impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions, with impressions and clicks refreshing about every 15 minutes and spend delayed seven to eight hours. To see conversions properly, connect server-side tracking. GrowthCentr's guide to the ChatGPT ads Conversions API covers the setup.

⚠️
Watch out: don't judge ChatGPT ads on CTR alone. A 0.50% click rate looks weak next to search, but ads often appear mid-conversation and most sessions keep going. Measure conversions, assisted pipeline, and branded search lift over 30 days before cutting budget.

ChatGPT ad spend by category

Spend shifted away from retail as more categories entered. Sensor Tower's US data shows shopping and retail falling from 37% of spend in April to 21% in August, while financial services jumped from 2% to 13%. Four of the top ten August spenders were financial services brands.

Commerce is still a big part of the plan. In September, Shopify became OpenAI's first ecommerce partner for ChatGPT ads, letting US merchants sync their storefronts and run campaigns from the Shopify App Store. Carousel ads made up about 23% of US desktop ads in late August, and multi-image ads entered open beta on October 26. From October 30, creative enhancements are on by default, with an opt-out.

ChatGPT ads vs Google and Meta: scale check

For all the growth, ChatGPT ads are tiny next to the incumbents. Alphabet reported Google Search and other revenue of $63.35 billion in Q3 2026, up 12%, and total Google advertising of $82.0 billion for the quarter. Meta reported $63.1 billion in Q3 2026 advertising revenue, up 26%.

Divide the $1 billion run rate by four and ChatGPT ads come to roughly $250 million a quarter, about 0.4% of the $63.35 billion Google Search earned in Q3. For deeper context on the search side, see GrowthCentr's Google Ads statistics for 2026.

What these ChatGPT ads statistics mean for B2B budgets

Three patterns stand out for B2B marketers planning 2027 budgets.

  1. Entry costs have collapsed. A channel that started with a $200,000 minimum now runs on self-serve CPC bids. A $5,000 test budget at a $4 CPC buys roughly 1,250 clicks, enough to read conversion rates on a few topics.
  2. Software buyers are already there. Software grew to 16% of US spend by August, and the top US advertisers in June were mostly SaaS brands. Your competitors may already be bidding on your category questions.
  3. Prices will likely rise again. CPMs fell while supply opened up, but the advertiser count keeps climbing. More bidders chasing the same conversations usually push CPCs up, so early tests are cheaper than later ones.

Organic visibility still matters alongside paid. The same buyers asking ChatGPT for vendor shortlists see both answers and ads, and ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users. Plan paid tests around the topics where your brand already shows up, or should.

GrowthCentr's take: should B2B teams test ChatGPT ads now?

🎯
GrowthCentr's take: yes, with a capped test. Software is already one of the biggest spend categories, CPCs have settled at $3 to $5 as a starting point, and self-serve has removed the six-figure minimum. Run a 30-day test on your highest-intent comparison and alternatives topics, with server-side conversion tracking switched on from day one.

The named downside: measurement is immature. OpenAI publishes no CTR benchmarks, third-party trackers report ad frequency anywhere from under 1% to 26% depending on method and month, and reporting delays spend data by hours. You'll be optimizing with less data than Google or LinkedIn give you.

What nobody knows yet: how prices hold up as 100,000+ advertisers bid for the same conversations, and whether OpenAI can keep trust metrics steady as ad load rises toward the levels its $100 billion plan needs. Recheck your CPCs monthly.
